Kittel Database for Hebrew FlashWorks (Second Edition)

About Teknia Hebrew FlashWorks

Teknia Hebrew FlashWorks is a vocabulary drilling program in which each word in the chosen database is tagged for type (noun, verb, etc.), chapter, and frequency in the biblical text. You may sort the words, for example, by chapter or randomly mix them for review. The software was developed by Teknia Software (http://www.teknia.com) and William D. Mounce, the author of Basics of Biblical Greek.

About the Kittel (2nd edition) Hebrew Database

A database based on the Hebrew vocabulary of Bonnie Pedrotti Kittel, Vicki Hoffer, and Rebecca Abts Wright, Biblical Hebrew: Text and Workbook (2nd edition; New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005) has been created by Tyler F. Williams. The database includes all of the vocabulary from Kittel, as well as a selection of frequent proper names and places.

There are two databases available. The only difference between them is how the words are grouped.

  • Vocabulary Organized by Lessons (Kittel 2nd ed vocab by lessons.vdb). This database has the words grouped according to when they are assigned in the lessons in Kittel. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that students will be responsible for anywhere from twenty-four to five words depending on the lesson. It also extends the memorizing of vocabulary throughout the entire textbook. (Lesson 53 is the extra section with proper names and places.)
  • Vocabulary Organized by 20s (Kittel 2nd ed vocab by 20s.vdb). Rather than grouping words according to the lessons from Kittel, this database uses the chapter tags to organize the words into groups of twenty words. This allows students to build vocabulary at a constant rate throughout the year and also (depending on how you assign the vocabulary) allows you to finish it earlier in the year allowing more time for review. N.B. The asterisk (*) indicates that the group does not have exactly 20 words (this is due to the way the vocabulary is numbered in the second edition with some numbers having up to four words associated with them; e.g., 99, 99a, 99b, and 99c).

Download the Kittel (2nd edition) Hebrew Words Database

The Kittel (2nd edition) Hebrew Words Database is available for download as zip archives for Macintosh and Windows users. The archive includes the Teknia Language Tools program, the TekniaHebrew font, the two Kittel databases, and installation instructions.

You will need the appropriate compression software to unzip the files once you have downloaded them (for Windows and Mac OS X you should just be able to double-click on the files; for Mac OS Classic you will need to unstuff using stuffit expander).

Installing the Kittel (2nd edition) Hebrew Words Database

Windows

Installation. There are four easy steps to follow before you can use the Kittel database.

  1. Unzip the “Kittel2_Flashworks_Win.zip” by double-clicking on it.
  2. Install Teknia Language Tools. To do this, double-click on the file called “Install_TLT_Greek.exe” and follow the instructions. (Note: You only need to install Teknia Language Tools; if you want the Greek font and database you may also install them but they are not necessary for using the Kittel database)
  3. Install the TekniaHebrew font by double-clicking on the filed called “Install_TekniaHebrew.exe.” This will automatically install the Hebrew font into the correct place on your computer.
  4. Copy the Kittel database(s) (named “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by lessons.vdb” or “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by 20s.vdb”) into the Teknia program folder (by default within your “Program Files” folder on your primary drive).

Using the Database. To use the database, open Teknia Language Tools, select “Open Database” from the “File” menu and select the database you want to use (either “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by lessons.vdb” or “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by 20s.vdb”)  This will open the Kittel database and then you are ready to begin to review your Hebrew vocabulary.

N.B. You should set your “Saved Preferences” (under the “File” menu) to open the Kittel database by default so that you do not need to locate and select the database every time you want to review your vocabulary.

Macintosh (OS X)

  1. Unstuff the “Kittel2_Flashworks_OSX.zip” by double-clicking on it.
  2. Drag the “Kittel2 Hebrew Flashworks (OSX)” folder to your “Applications” folder on your hard drive.
  3. Install the TekniaHebrew font by double-clicking on the filed called “TekniaHebrew.ttf” and click “install font” (bottom right-hand corner). This will automatically install the Hebrew font into the correct place on your computer.

Using the Database. To use the database, open Teknia Language Tools, select “Open Database” from the “File” menu and select the database you want to use (either “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by lessons.vdb” or “Kittel 2nd ed vocab by 20s.vdb”)  This will open the Kittel database and then you are ready to begin to review your Hebrew vocabulary.
