After a few seconds of interminable silence one student spoke up “Well, at least he had ONE friend.”

There are some pretty good sections on lament and examples of preaching lament in there.

It is so ironic how people see lament as unfaithfulness. You made the point in your post that nearly all end with the faithfulness of God. I think there is a valuable point in the lament psalms – we shouldn’t be afraid to ask God the tough questions (Where were you? etc.) because he is the one with the answers. In fact, these questions show the extent of our faithfulness as we go to him for answers.

You are of course spot on as Steve said. I believe that there lies a need for a work to be written for the laity on this very subject. I have likewise taught a class on the Psalms and was surprised to find that most of my students were clueless as to what the Psalter actually taught concerning times of grief. Perhaps in the future we could discuss this possibility.
